Good day! I'm Rachel Lynde, from Avonlea. I wasn't too fond of Marilla's orphan at first, but now that young girl has grown on me. I'm here to tell you all the going ons in Avonlea, nothing escapes my eyes.
Anne Shirley: Our main character, or as this imaginative girl says, the heroine. A young orphan adopted by Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert after a misake was made and she was sent instead of a boy. She has red hair, which she is sensitive about, and grey eyes that sometimes look green. She's known for getting into scrape, she's given her bosom friend currant wine, dyed her hair green, sank a flat, let her imagination run away while she imagined ghost into the Haunted Woods, and she even flvaored a cake with liniment instead of vanilla for a minister and his wife! That's not all she has done. Her rivalry with Gilbert Blythe started when he called her "carrots" which caused her to take her slate and crack in on his head, and she refused to forgive him till the end. She has a fondness for plants and believes they have spirits as well. She also has a talent for reciting, but she didn't even know how to pray before she came to Green Gables. I say her imagination has gotten her into many scrapes such as, letting food burn or forgetting things. She also has a fondness for looking for people she likes to call kindred spirits. She later attended Queens, after placing first in the entrance exam, to earn her teaching license. In the end after Anne got her teaching license and Matthew died she gave up her Avery award and chance to become a B.A to stay and teach to stop Marilla from almost selling Green Gables. She almost taught at the Carmody School, but Gilbert Blythe gave up teaching at the Avonlea School so she could stay at Green Gables all week.
Marilla Cuthbert: The sister of Matthew Cuthbert. Before Anne came to Green Gables she rarely laughed and always was serious and all business and no play, but I believe she has mellowed down. She is very loving towards Anne, but she doesn't know how to show it so she is stricter towards Anne. She doesn't approve much of Anne's imagination and always tells her to hold her tounge when she talk too much. Marilla is often said to have no sympathy compared to her brother and she is a lot more social than poor old Matthew. Towards the end her eyes began to fail and she had to give up a few things in order to save her sight. In the end she tells Anne that she loves her and the two have a stronger bond.
Matthew Cuthbert: Shy, old Matthew Cuthbert never really liked women, besides Marilla, until he met Anne. He immediatley took a liking to the young orphan as she talked on their way home. He was the reason Marilla even decided to keep the young girl! He took care of the farm except some of the chores Marilla and Anne fo. He loved Anne greatly and for Christmas had a dress with puffed sleeves made for her, it was made by me since when he tried to buy one he bought twenty pounds of brown sugar since the clerk was a lady. He began having bad heart spells while Anne was off at Queens and also received a notice of the Abbey Bank having some trouble, but he didn't pull out his money. He was proud of Anne winning the Avery, and a few days later he received a letter that changed all of Anne's plans. He died from a heart attack. I hope his soul is resting in peace as it watches over his girl, his Anne of Green Gables.
Diana Barry: Black haired Diana Barry is Anne's bosom friend, and the closest girl living to her. Her imagination was dulled after her mother got upset with her imaginng ghost into the Haunted Woods. She also was unable to talk to Anne for a long time, beacause Anne got her drunk with currant wine when they thought it was only cordial. That all changed when her sister, Minnie May, got sick with croup and Anne saved her life just in time. They then went back to enjoying their walks down Lover's Lane to school. She also was Anne's desk mate up until Anne went off to Queens. She was also the one that brought Anne the pass list a day before it was to be out. Her parents didn't want her to go to Queens so she was left behind while many of the others went off to persue a teaching license. She tried to comfort Anne about Matthew's death, but proved little results. Near the end she signaled Anne, with their signal method, to tell her something. She has vowed to be Anee's dearest friend and for Anne to be hers and they shall never have another friend dearer to them.
Mrs. Rachel Lynde: Nothing escapes my sharp eyes as I sit by my window knitting my quilts, I've knitted sixteen to be exact, as I watch people walk, drive, or run by. If any news goes on in Avonlea I'm usually the one to find out about it and spread it. My first meeting with Anne ws not too good, it was horrid! She lost her temper after I called her homely, and said she had many freckles and commented on her hair being red. She later apologized and I forgave her. I then kept telling her to be a good girl and even helped Matthew make her Christmas present! I use to think Marilla was a fool for taking in this girl, but now I think differently.
Mr. Lynde: My husband who takes care of our farm. He is very busy and has never really met Anne before.
Mr. and Mrs. Barry: Diana and Minnie May's parents. Mrs. Barry is a very proper lady and didn't like when Anne got Diana drunk with currant wine, yet she wanted the to be friends so Diana wouldn't read so much and go outside more. After their youngest daughter was saved by Anne they allowed Diana to play with her once again. Mr. Barry even carried Anne home when she broke her ankle from walking the the ridge pole. He also brought home the pass list and let Diana take it to Anne.
Miss Josephine Barry: Diana's aunt. She first met Anne when she and Diana both bounced on top of her when she was sleeping in the spare bedroom. This upset her very much and she threatened to return to Carmody and not pay for Diana's music lessons, but Anne talked her out of it like she talked to me. Miss Barry enjoyed Anne and invited her over to Carmody to stay with her for a few days. During Anne's time at Queens she found a place for Anne to board.
Mr. Phillips: Anne first teacher. He paid more attention to Prissy Andrews than his other pupils, many of his pupils believed he was courting her. He used Anne as a scape goat many times. He made her stand with "Ann Shirley had a bad temper. Anne Shirley must learn to control her temper," written above her head and he spelled her name wrong. Then when many pupils were late to class he picked her out because of the wreath of lilies on her head and made her sit with Gilbert Blythe. he left and was replaced by Miss Stacy.
Miss Stacy: Anne's second teacher and the one that asked if she would like to study for the entrance into Queens. Miss Stacy's methods of teaching are different and she was our first female teacher in Avonlea. She allowed her student to put up a concert to raise money for a new school flag, during that time she had them recite weekly and do physical culture exercises, but if they didn't recite on Friday they had field days where she takes them out to study about plants and animals. Her last year was the year Anne and the others began to study for Queens. Anne calls her a kin and forgiving person and strives to be like her in the future.
Gilbert Blythe: Anne's former rival and new friend. He got off on a bad start by insulting her about her hair by calling her "carrots" to which he received a slate being cracked on his head. He asked for her forgiveness and even gave her a candy that said "You're Sweet." On his side of his rivalry with Anne it was mainly for fun and not that serious. Diana said when they did the concert with Miss Stacy she said he picked up a rose that was in Anne's hair after she left the platform. He also saved her from drowning to death by rowing by at just the right time and rowing her to shore. He asked her for her forgivness, but stubborn Anne held onto her pride and didn't agree. After that he began to take his rivalry more serious. He began ignoring Anne, but paid a lot of attention to the other girls like Ruby Gillis. He also went to Queens and got a teaching license, and he won the medal. He intended to go to Remond to get a degree to become a doctor, but had to earn his own money, so he decided to teach. He was going to teach at Avonlea, but instead gave up the school for Anne and signed papers with White Sands. At the end he ginally made friends with Anne.
Ruby Gillis: A blone haired friend of Anne's. She isn't as close to Anne as Diana is, but she is a close friend to her. She always talks about how she is going to have many beaus when she grows up and plans on teaching for only two years after she got her license. She never really cared about ambitions or the wonders of life.
Jane Andrews: Another of Anne's friends. Like Ruby she is not as close to Anne as Diana is. She earned her license and wants to devote her whole life to teaching since it gives you a salary and your husband complains if you ask for a share of the egg and butter money. She says this from experience. She also was the on that Anne walked with to Queens the day she won the Avery. She has gone on to teach at Newbridge.
Josie and Gertie Pye: Two of the Pye children. They always cause problems for the teachers at Avonlea schools. Josie is the older one and who caused the most trouble for Anne, by being rude to her, and everyone else, all the time. Josie dared Anne to walk the Barry house's ridge pole, but instead Anne broke her ankle. Anne once said it is hard for her to like a Pye. Josie got her teaching license and Gertie was told to be out of Avonlea school. Josie also said that she went to Queens for education purposes.
Mr. and Mrs. Allen: The Minister and his Wife. Anne also wishes to be like Mrs. Allen as well. Mrs. Allen is a kind person eating Anne's cake even though she flvaored it wrong. Mr. Allen is a good preacher, because Anne says it sounds like he always means it. They've been great to Avonlea and Anne.
Anne's Other Classmates: Anne has had other classmates besides Josie, Gilbert, and Diana, such as Charlie Sloane and Moody. A few of them joined her off to Queens and others stayed behind at the school. None of them ever tried to best Anne or Gilbert in their studies. They are maily younger thaAnne or people she just didn't socialize with.
Prissy Andrews: The girl studying for Queens when Anne first attended school. People say Mr. Phillips was courting her and that he mainly paid attention to her. When Miss Stacy came she was already off to Queens, I don't know what happened to her after Queens, but I believe she is off studying.
